i was being lame and filling out one of those surveys that we all love/loathe on the myspace bulletin board, when i stumbled across this question:

What type of food do you eat at your grandparents house?

here's the answer i was going to put:

food: my favorite topic =)

mom's side: tuna salad sandwiches with state line potato chips. and every southern country comfort food you can imagine: grits, collard greens, biscuits, pan fried chicken, etc. and irish food. mmmmm pot pies, and stews.

dad's side: kielbasa. sauerkraut. galumpkies. pierogis. krokiets. some kind of potato pancake. borscht. beef stroganov. chicken Kiev. a cornucopia of polish and russian goodness.

but then i thought about it. for some reason, this question struck me.

maybe its because i miss all those old world polish and russian recipes, and i never had the chance to learn them before my dad cut that side of my family off and my grandparents died.

maybe its because, as i read the list of all the nationalities of food i've been raised on, it started to register as to why i'm so in love with food. i'm so fortunate that i wasn't raised on mac and cheese and grilled cheese. not to say i didn't eat those things regularly, but i ate some funky stuff as a kid, and its reflective in what i eat and what i do now.

which then of course got me thinking about how magnanimous a role food plays in not only preserving our culture, but defining who we are as individuals.

then again, maybe it's just because i'm just really hungry and i keep thinking about galumpkies.
